Vote for DPHS in TangerKids Members Choice Program!

Vote for DPHS in TangerKids Members Choice Program! thumbnail262838
Deer Park High School is very excited to be 1 of 9 finalists in the country for the TangerKids Members Choice program! Earlier this school year, the DPHS Family and Consumer Science (FACS) and Science departments teamed up and applied for a grant to establish a hydroponic garden.

"This garden will produce up to 384 pounds of fresh produce each year, providing FACS students direct and consistent access to fresh, nutritionally dense ingredients," Director of Social Studies and FACS Vanessa Langdon said.

By learning about hydroponic farming, science students can understand how this method contributes to sustainable food systems, reduces our carbon footprint and human impact on the planet.

"We are grateful for the support Tanger has shown us through this process and are very excited to bring this garden to the students of Deer Park High School," Director of Science and Technology Alison Branca-Peterson said.

Please help us secure more funding for our program by voting for Deer Park High School here.

Voting is open from Dec. 2-13.

Deer Park High School held its 63rd annual National Honor Society induction ceremony on Nov. 14, welcoming 92 new members.

“Our chapter members are leaders in many student organizations, and we serve our school and community through many activities,” NHS President Pavani Pointi said. “We are so proud of this record of accomplishment and welcome these new members who bring new energy in support of our continuing work as NHS members.”

Additional speakers included Vice President Tonika Sikder on Scholarship, Secretary Hannah Legname on Service, Treasurer Lissha Varghese on Leadership and Class of 2025 valedictorian Reza Zorakhsh on Character. Class of 2025 salutatorian Adib Shaikh led the Pledge of Allegiance.

“This is always one of the most enjoyable events I come to throughout the course of the year in my duties as the legislator representing the Deer Park community, mostly because it renews my faith in that we have tomorrow’s leaders sitting right in front of us,” said Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, the evening’s special guest. “What makes this community so strong is that we have such terrific young men and women who are not only dedicated to their scholarship and their academics, but they’re also dedicated to this beloved community.”

Celebrating Hispanic and South Asian Literary Traditions in Deer Park

Deer Park students and teachers celebrated the literature and cultural writers of both Hispanic and South Asian traditions thumbnail262685

Deer Park students and teachers celebrated the literature and cultural writers of both Hispanic and South Asian traditions during the month of October. ELA classes at Robert Frost Middle School and Deer Park High School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a day devoted to the inspiring writers of Spanish backgrounds. South Asian works of literature were also given a day to be highlighted in anticipation of the Diwali holiday.

Students participated in different activities celebrating these writers, including browsing and reading young adult lit, writing poems modeled on historical authors, sharing cultural foods and even letting guest readers perform poetry and analyzing translation in these languages. Students visited the libraries in both schools for activities that included student-led discussions, poetry readings and discussions about the inclusion of new authors.

Deer Park High Schoolers Visit Veterans

students from Laurie Osbern’s U.S. History classes, Patriot Club and Library Leaders took part in a meaningful visit to Momentum at South Bay thumbnail262624

In honor of Veterans Day, students from Laurie Osbern’s U.S. History classes, Patriot Club and Library Leaders took part in a meaningful visit to Momentum at South Bay Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility. This visit marked the first of what the school hopes will become an ongoing tradition, providing an opportunity for students to connect with local veterans and residents in a heartwarming exchange of stories, games and gratitude.

The students engaged in conversations with the veterans, learning about their experiences and sharing in the spirit of the holiday. One student reflected, “One thing I learned is that being a veteran is a responsibility and an honor to serve our country.” Another shared, “I learned about one veteran’s experience in the Korean War,” while others were inspired by stories of life in the Navy, such as one veteran’s time aboard a submarine and his love for swimming. Additionally, students heard from a woman who shared her perspective of having a husband who served in the Vietnam War.

The students also enjoyed playing trivia games with the residents, with one student noting, “I enjoyed playing trivia with the residents and liked how one man and I connected because we are both Irish.” These interactions brought smiles and laughter to the facility, fostering meaningful connections and leaving lasting impressions on both the students and the residents.

“The visit was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and service, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans and providing students with a memorable, enriching experience,” Osbern said. “Our school community looks forward to future opportunities to continue building connections with residents and veterans, further strengthening the bonds between generations.”
